With “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life,” Museum Brandhorst presents the world’s first comprehensive institutional exhibition dedicated to the two artists. The title of the show is borrowed from the motto of Keith Haring’s birthday celebrations: “Party of Life” tells of the cosmos of the 1980s, of MTV, discos, voguing, hip-hop, New Wave and graffiti. Within this context, the exhibition traces the two artists’ friendship. It reveals parallels in their artistic identity, their openness to cooperations and community projects, and their inclusive attitude: Art and its messages should reach as many people as possible.
Maria VMier: „no: tongue breaks and thin fire is racing under skin“

Over the course of two weeks, a project by Maria VMier, an artist working between New York and Munich, will take place at Museum Brandhorst. Together with many companions, they interweave research, texts and objects with a textile intervention. A tent-like structure that they created with the textile artist Evelyn Sitter will occupy the center of Cy Twombly’s Roses Gallery. In this symbolic space, VMier investigates the relationship of desire and power that exists between the institution and the marginalized local artist scene, as well as the possibilities of a community-building, erotic appropriation of the museum. The ancient Greek symposium serves as a symbol; a format of gathering and exchange which, like the museum, is subject to many mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. The title “no: tongue breaks and thin fire is racing under skin” is taken from a poem by Sappho, the most famous female poet of antiquity, translated by Anne Carson. In VMier’s intervention, Sappho is the host.
Brandhorst Flag Commission: Lily van der Stokker

For the opening weekend of “Various Others,” Museum Brandhorst presents the third “Flag Commission,” where artists design flags for the poles in front of the museum that were originally intended to carry advertisements. This year, the renowned Dutch artist Lily van der Stokker was invited to participate. Her design will be presented to the public at a breakfast event. The artist (*1954, lives and works in Amsterdam and New York) has become known for her installations and murals, which are based on decorative imagery from everyday life and domestic spaces and which question their gender and identity-political implications. For the flags, Stokker has not created drawings with integrated text – as one might expect from her – but instead literally places a list of words revolving around drugstore articles, items of clothing, household objects, physical ailments and insults in the public space.

Mit „Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life“ präsentiert das Museum Brandhorst die weltweit erste umfassende institutionelle Ausstellung, die sich den beiden Künstlern widmet. Der Titel der Schau ist dem Motto von Keith Harings Geburtstagsfeiern entlehnt: „Party of Life“ erzählt vom Kosmos der 1980er-Jahre, von MTV, Discos, Voguing, Hip-Hop, New Wave und Graffiti. In diesem Umfeld zeichnet die Ausstellung die Künstlerfreundschaft der beiden nach. Dabei offenbart sie Parallelen in ihrem künstlerischen Selbstverständnis, ihrer Offenheit für Kooperation und gemeinschaftliche Projekte sowie ihrer inklusiven Haltung: Kunst und ihre Botschaften sollten möglichst viele Menschen erreichen.

Über zwei Wochen manifestiert sich im Museum Brandhorst ein Projekt der zwischen New York und München arbeitenden Künstler:in Maria VMier. Gemeinsam mit vielen Companions verwebt sie Recherche, Texte und Objekte mit einer Textilintervention. Eine Zeltstruktur, die sie mit der Textilkünstlerin Evelyn Sitter schuf, besetzt das Zentrum von Cy Twomblys Rosensaal. In diesem symbolischen Raum fragt VMier nach dem Begehrens- und Machtverhältnis zwischen Institution und marginalisierter, lokaler Künstler:innenschaft sowie nach Möglichkeiten einer gemeinschaftsbildenden, erotischen Aneignung des Museums. Als Bild dient das Symposion aus der griechischen Antike, ein Format der Zusammenkunft und des Austauschs, das wie das Museum vielen Ein- und Ausschlussmechanismen unterworfen ist. Der Titel „no: tongue breaks and thin fire is racing under skin“ stammt aus einem von Anne Carson übersetzten Gedicht von Sappho, der berühmtesten Poetin der Antike. In VMiers Intervention ist sie die Gastgeberin.
Brandhorst Flag Commission: Lily van der Stokker

Zum Eröffnungswochenende von „Various Others“ präsentiert das Museum Brandhorst die dritte „Flag Commission“, für die Künstler:innen die ursprünglich als Werbeträger angedachten Fahnen vor dem Museum gestalten. Dieses Jahr wurde die renommierte niederländische Künstlerin Lily van der Stokker eingeladen. Im Rahmen einer morgendlichen Vernissage werden die Fahnen dem Publikum vorgestellt. Die Künstlerin (*1954, lebt und arbeitet in Amsterdam und New York) wurde für ihre Installationen und Wandmalereien bekannt, die sich an dekorativen Bildwelten des Alltags und des privaten Wohnraums anlehnen und diese nach geschlechts- und identitätspolitischen Implikationen befragen. Für die Flagge hat Stokker nicht – wie man es von ihr erwarten könnte – eine Zeichnung mit integriertem Text geschaffen, sondern stellt eine Auflistung von Wörtern zu Drogerieartikeln, Kleidungsstücken, Haushaltsgegenständen, körperlichen Beschwerden sowie Beschimpfungen buchstäblich in den öffentlichen Raum.
